What's Happening?
Rep. Celeste Maloy (UT-02) and Rep. Sara Jacobs (CA-51) have introduced the bipartisan AI Threat Output and Monitoring Incident Containment Act (ATOMIC Act). This legislation directs the Department of Energy to establish a national program to evaluate
advanced artificial intelligence systems for nuclear-related risks. The program, named the Advanced Artificial Intelligence Nuclear Evaluation Program, will utilize the expertise of the Department of Energy’s National Laboratories to test AI systems for vulnerabilities such as generating sensitive nuclear information and bypassing safety protocols. The bill targets developers who have invested at least $2 billion in AI development over the past five years, ensuring they provide secure access and technical information for evaluations. The legislation also includes protections for proprietary business information.
