What's Happening?
Christopher Newport University (CNU) and the Newport News Community held their fifth community walk, visiting Riverside Elementary School on October 30. The event, part of a series led by CNU First Lady Angie Kelly, included approximately 200 participants,
among them Delegate Shelly Simonds, Mayor Phillips Jones, and City Councilman Cleon Long. The walk aimed to strengthen connections between CNU and local schools, with Riverside Principal Katherine Jenn emphasizing the importance of building partnerships and showing students future possibilities. Riverside's Boomin' Bears Drumline greeted the contingent, and CNU President William Kelly presented gifts, including sidewalk chalk for students and a challenge coin for Principal Jenn.
Why It's Important?
This community walk highlights a significant effort to bridge the gap between higher education and local elementary schools in Newport News. By bringing university leaders, local politicians, and community members directly to schools, the initiative aims to make higher education feel more accessible and tangible for young students. Principal Jenn noted that seeing college students and community leaders in their neighborhood helps Riverside students envision a future in higher education. This direct engagement can inspire students, foster a sense of community support, and potentially influence their academic aspirations, reinforcing the idea that a path to college is within their reach and supported by their community.
What's Next?
The ongoing series of community walks indicates a sustained commitment from Christopher Newport University and Newport News leadership to engage with local schools. Future walks are likely to continue to other schools within the Newport News Public Schools district, building on the established pattern of visits. These events will continue to foster relationships between CNU, local educators, law enforcement, and civic leaders, strengthening community ties. The initiative aims to create a lasting impact on students by consistently demonstrating the community's investment in their future and making higher education a visible and attainable goal.
Beyond the Headlines
The community walk initiative extends beyond simple visits; it represents a strategic investment in the educational pipeline and community development. By physically connecting a university with elementary schools, it demystifies higher education for young children and their families, potentially increasing college readiness and enrollment rates in the long term. This collaborative model also strengthens civic engagement by involving multiple stakeholders—education, government, and community—in a shared goal. Such programs can cultivate a culture of aspiration and support within the community, demonstrating that collective effort can pave the way for future generations' success and foster a more integrated and supportive local environment.
