What's Happening?
Thales and Kongsberg have successfully conducted a live firing test of the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) from the StrikeMaster missile launch vehicle in Norway. This test demonstrated the potential of the StrikeMaster as a low-risk
solution for Australia's long-range strike needs. The NSM, a fifth-generation stealth cruise missile, is designed for both maritime strike and land attack operations. It is currently deployed or selected for use by 14 nations, including the US, UK, and Canada. The missile was commissioned into service with the Royal Australian Navy in 2024.
Why It's Important?
The successful test of the NSM from the StrikeMaster vehicle underscores the missile's versatility and effectiveness in modern warfare. As nations seek to enhance their defense capabilities, the NSM offers a reliable option for long-range precision strikes. The collaboration between Thales and Kongsberg also highlights the importance of international partnerships in advancing military technology. For Australia, the integration of the NSM into its defense arsenal represents a significant step in bolstering its maritime security and strategic deterrence capabilities.
What's Next?
The NSM is set to be manufactured in Australia, with operations at a new Kongsberg Missile Factory near Newcastle expected to commence in 2027. This development will involve over 150 local suppliers and create approximately 700 jobs, contributing to the local economy. The continued deployment and potential expansion of the NSM's use by other nations could further solidify its position as a leading choice for modern military forces.
