What's Happening?
A new constellation of satellites, known as FireSat, is set to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base, promising to revolutionize wildfire detection and response. Developed by the Earth Fire Alliance with funding from the Bezos Earth Fund, Google, and the Gordon
and Betty Moore Foundation, the FireSat network will eventually consist of 50 satellites. These satellites are equipped with advanced thermal sensors capable of detecting fires as small as a beach bonfire and distinguishing between different fire intensities. The data collected will be shared with fire agencies in California, Oregon, Texas, and internationally, providing critical information to help manage and mitigate wildfires.
