What's Happening?
MSF International is seeking an Intersectional Importation and Customs Specialist to enhance its global supply chain operations. This role is part of the International Office Supply team and reports to the Intersectional Importations & Customs Advisor.
The specialist will provide strategic, technical, and hands-on support on importation and customs matters to MSF entities worldwide. The objective is to improve the predictability, compliance, cost-efficiency, and operational continuity of MSF's importation and customs processes. Key responsibilities include contributing to the development and implementation of MSF's intersectional Importation & Customs (I&C) strategy, analyzing I&C as access-related constraints, and developing practical tools and guidance. The specialist will also provide remote and in-country support to MSF country programs, conduct assessments, and offer hands-on operational assistance in complex situations. This position is crucial for ensuring efficient and effective access to quality supplies for MSF operations.
Why It's Important?
This position is critical for MSF's ability to deliver timely and effective humanitarian aid globally. Efficient importation and customs processes directly impact the availability of medical supplies and equipment in regions affected by conflict, epidemics, and natural disasters. Delays or complications in customs can lead to critical shortages, jeopardizing patient care and operational continuity. By optimizing these processes, the specialist will help reduce costs, improve compliance with international regulations, and ensure that aid reaches those in need more quickly. The 'intersectional' approach recognizes that importation challenges are not just technical supply issues but also involve legal, regulatory, operational, and humanitarian representation dimensions, requiring a coordinated multi-layered response. This role is fundamental to strengthening the logistical backbone of MSF's humanitarian mission.
What's Next?
The application deadline for the Intersectional Importation and Customs Specialist position is November 22, 2026, with a planned start date of January 1, 2027. The selected specialist will immediately begin contributing to the development and implementation of MSF's I&C strategy within the Country Support on Importation platform. This will involve analyzing existing processes, identifying gaps and risks, and proposing improvements. The specialist will also engage in regular field visits to MSF country programs to provide targeted support and follow up on recommendations. Ongoing collaboration with various internal and external stakeholders, including legal and regulatory teams, will be essential to ensure alignment and coherence across the supply chain and to address complex importation challenges effectively.
Beyond the Headlines
The creation of an Intersectional Importation and Customs Specialist role highlights the increasing complexity of humanitarian logistics in a globalized and often politically charged world. Beyond the technical aspects of customs and trade, this position addresses the ethical imperative of ensuring equitable access to life-saving medical products. The challenges of navigating diverse national regulations, political sensitivities, and security concerns underscore the need for specialized expertise in humanitarian organizations. This role also reflects a broader trend towards strategic supply chain management in the non-profit sector, recognizing that operational efficiency is paramount to maximizing impact. The focus on 'intersectional' challenges implies a holistic approach, acknowledging that logistical hurdles are often intertwined with broader issues of access, advocacy, and international relations, making this role a critical nexus for MSF's operational and advocacy efforts.
