What's Happening?
Space agencies worldwide, including NASA and the European Space Agency, are conducting the largest planetary defense drill in history as comet 3I/ATLAS approaches Earth. This exercise, running from November
27 through January 2026, is organized by the International Asteroid Warning Network. The drill aims to enhance the detection and monitoring of potentially hazardous asteroids and Near-Earth Objects. Although 3I/ATLAS poses no immediate threat, passing within 170 million miles of Earth, the exercise provides a critical opportunity to refine tracking and response strategies for future cosmic threats.
