What's Happening?
Saudi Arabia and Iraq are set to receive their first Medium-range Surface-to-Air Missile Block II (M-SAM II) systems in 2028, as announced at the World Defense Show 2026 in Riyadh. The systems are part of a $3.2 billion contract signed by Saudi Arabia in 2023,
making it the second Middle Eastern country to order the M-SAM II after the UAE. The systems are being developed by LIG Nex1, with radars supplied by Hanwha Systems and launchers by Hanwha Aerospace. The delivery timelines for these systems have not been finalized, but they represent a significant enhancement of the air defense capabilities of both countries.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of M-SAM II systems by Saudi Arabia and Iraq marks a significant development in the defense capabilities of these nations, potentially altering the strategic balance in the Middle East. This move could enhance their ability to defend against aerial threats, thereby increasing their military autonomy and regional influence. The deal also reflects the growing defense ties between South Korea and Middle Eastern countries, highlighting the global reach of South Korean defense technology. For the U.S., this development may influence its defense strategy and partnerships in the region, as it navigates the complex geopolitical landscape.
