What's Happening?
Turkish companies STM and Ada Shipyard have commenced the construction of the Portuguese Navy's second logistics support ship, NRP D. Dinis (A5212), in Istanbul. This development follows the initial contract awarded in December 2024 for two ships. The
first ship, NRP Luís De Camões, began construction in November 2025. These vessels are designed to be 137 meters long, with a beam of 19 meters, and a displacement of 11,000 tonnes. They will accommodate up to 200 personnel and have an endurance of 90 days without resupply, with a maximum range of 14,000 nautical miles. The ships are equipped for various operational roles, including solid and liquid replenishment at sea, and are armed with advanced defensive systems.
Why It's Important?
The construction of these logistics support ships is significant for Portugal's naval capabilities, enhancing its operational reach and sustainability at sea. These ships will enable the Portuguese Navy to conduct extended missions without the need for frequent resupply, thus increasing their strategic and tactical flexibility. The project also represents a collaboration between Portugal and Turkey, highlighting international defense partnerships. The advanced capabilities of these ships, including their defensive systems and ability to transport tactical vehicles, will bolster Portugal's maritime defense and logistical operations.
