What's Happening?
Architecture firms KPF and Saraiva + Associados have repurposed an abandoned shopping mall in Lisbon into the Oriente Green Campus, a technology and laboratory office hub. The project retained 91% of the original structure, significantly reducing the upfront
embodied carbon by 58% compared to a new build. The campus features courtyards, passive shading, and high-performance facades, allowing for natural ventilation for about 125 days a year. Roof-mounted photovoltaic panels provide a substantial portion of the lighting needs. The transformation aims to rejuvenate the site and contribute to Lisbon's innovation ecosystem.
Why It's Important?
The transformation of the abandoned mall into a sustainable innovation campus highlights the potential for urban renewal projects to contribute to economic growth while maintaining environmental responsibility. By retaining much of the original structure, the project significantly reduces carbon emissions, setting a precedent for future developments. This initiative not only revitalizes a blighted area but also supports Lisbon's position as a hub for innovation and technology, potentially attracting businesses and talent to the region.
