What's Happening?
The state of Alabama, under the leadership of Governor Kay Ivey and Department of Workforce Secretary Greg Reed, has introduced a new initiative to expand the eligibility of federal Pell Grants. This initiative, known as the Workforce Pell grant program,
aims to include short-term training programs that cater to high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand occupations. Traditionally, Pell Grants have been awarded to low-income undergraduate students attending conventional higher education programs. However, this expansion allows over 30% of Alabamians who do not pursue college education to access these funds for career and technical education. The eligible training programs must last between eight and 15 weeks, involve 150 to 599 hours of instruction, and lead to recognized credentials in in-demand fields such as construction, manufacturing, business administration, and education.
