What's Happening?
The Victorian Government plans to introduce an entry fee for visitors to the Twelve Apostles, a popular natural landmark on the Great Ocean Road. The fee will be implemented at the new Twelve Apostles Visitor Experience Centre, set to open in late 2026.
The revenue generated will be used to fund the protection and maintenance of the coastline, including upgrades to visitor facilities and historic landmarks. Local residents and members of the Eastern Maar community will be exempt from the fee. The initiative aims to manage visitor numbers and ensure the sustainability of the site.
Why It's Important?
Introducing an entry fee for the Twelve Apostles is a significant step towards sustainable tourism management. The funds collected will help preserve the natural beauty of the area, ensuring that it remains a viable tourist destination for future generations. This approach aligns with global trends in tourism, where popular sites implement fees to manage visitor impact and fund conservation efforts. By controlling visitor numbers, the initiative also aims to enhance the visitor experience, reduce congestion, and support local communities economically. It reflects a growing recognition of the need to balance tourism with environmental conservation.
