What's Happening?
Pensacola State College (PSC) and its Pirates CARE student resource program recently hosted the annual Carla Williams Domestic Violence Awareness & Remembrance Walk on October 22. The event, held at the Pensacola campus track, honors the memory of Carla Williams,
a former PSC associate professor, assistant coach, and Lady Pirates basketball player, who died in May 2021 due to domestic violence. Williams dedicated over 24 years to PSC across Athletics, Collegiate High School, and the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. She was posthumously inducted into the PSC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. The walk serves to raise awareness about domestic violence and supports the Carla Williams Memorial Endowed Scholarship, which aids future PSC student-athletes. This year's event raised $1,285 for the scholarship fund through T-shirt sales and registration fees, with nearly 200 participants.
Why It's Important?
This annual event is important as it highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence, a significant societal concern in the U.S. By honoring Carla Williams, PSC not only remembers a valued member of its community but also provides a platform for education and awareness, which can contribute to preventing future incidents. The funds raised for the Carla Williams Memorial Endowed Scholarship directly support student-athletes, ensuring that Williams' legacy of mentoring and encouraging students continues. This initiative demonstrates how educational institutions can play a crucial role in addressing social issues and fostering a supportive environment for their students, both academically and personally. The event also underscores the importance of community engagement in tackling sensitive topics and providing resources for those affected by domestic violence.
What's Next?
The Carla Williams Memorial Endowed Scholarship fund currently totals $35,214, and contributions are continuously accepted through the Pensacola State College Foundation website. The annual walk is expected to continue as a recurring event during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, maintaining its focus on remembrance and awareness. PSC Dean of Students Lynsey Listau, who oversees Pirates CARE, emphasizes the importance of connecting individuals with organizations that address domestic violence and support survivors. Future events will likely continue to engage the community and raise funds, further solidifying the scholarship's ability to support student-athletes and perpetuate Carla Williams' positive influence.

The Carla Williams Domestic Violence Awareness & Remembrance Walk extends beyond a simple fundraising event; it represents a profound commitment to addressing the societal impact of domestic violence.
