New Scholarship Supports Black and Indigenous Students in Agriculture

What's Happening?

A new scholarship, the 2026 Cynthia Hayes Memorial Scholarship, has been announced by the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition in partnership with the Southeastern African American Farmers’ Organic Network. This scholarship aims to support students committed to sustainable agriculture and food justice. Cynthia Hayes, the scholarship's namesake, was a prominent advocate for Black farming communities and played a significant role in shaping equity initiatives. The scholarship offers $5,000 to selected students and opportunities to connect with leaders in sustainable agriculture. It is specifically targeted at students who identify as Black and/or Indigenous, focusing on those involved in agriculture, policy, and grassroots organizing.

This scholarship addresses systemic barriers faced by Black and Indigenous farmers in the U.S., such as land access and representation in policy spaces. By supporting students who are committed to promoting racial equity in agriculture, the scholarship aims to empower future leaders who can drive change in the food and farm system.
