Luxembourg-based satellite communications startup OQ Technology has successfully sent a test emergency broadcast message from its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites directly to mobile phones on Earth. This marks the first instance of a European satellite operator
achieving direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity with cellular devices on the ground. While other companies like Viasat, SpaceX's Starlink, and AST SpaceMobile have previously accomplished similar feats, OQ Technology's milestone is significant for Europe's development of sovereign D2D capabilities. The company currently operates 10 satellites in LEO and plans to offer emergency messaging services to governments and private enterprises, with future expansions to consumers, governments, and industrial organizations.
