The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported an increase in the presence of two dangerous pathogens in U.S. waters: Vibrio vulnificus, known as 'flesh-eating bacteria,' and Naegleria fowleri, the 'brain-eating amoeba.' These pathogens thrive
in warm water conditions, a situation exacerbated by climate change. Vibrio vulnificus is primarily found in warm brackish waters, while Naegleria fowleri is more common in warm freshwater lakes and rivers. As of mid-June, eight cases of flesh-eating bacteria have been confirmed in Florida, and the brain-eating amoeba has been detected in two popular national parks. The CDC emphasizes the importance of awareness and precaution, especially for children who are more likely to swallow water while swimming.
