What's Happening?
U.S. Space Command, under the leadership of Commander Gen. Stephen Whiting, is developing a new strategy focused on space-based maneuvering. This initiative comes as adversaries increasingly demonstrate advanced refueling and logistics capabilities in space.
During a keynote speech at the Space Foundation’s annual Space Symposium, Gen. Whiting emphasized the need for a dynamic strategy that can adapt to protracted conflicts with peer opponents. Earlier this year, he introduced the concept of the Apollo maneuvers, a series of on-orbit exercises designed to test the U.S. military’s space systems. Spacecom has also initiated a quarterly tabletop exercise series called Apollo Insights, with the first exercise conducted on March 26, focusing on space-based weapons of mass destruction. Future exercises will address maneuver warfare, proliferated orbits, and missile defense, particularly in the Arctic region.
