Denver International Airport (DEN) has adopted new Internet of Things (IoT) technology to improve the maintenance and operation of its elevators, escalators, and moving walkways. This initiative aims to address delays in repair processes by using sensors
and interfaces to monitor equipment and promptly alert officials when failures occur. The technology, provided by Knaq, offers insights into equipment operations, helping to maintain a positive passenger experience by ensuring all equipment is functional. A pilot program initiated in 2023 demonstrated that the technology could significantly reduce downtime, with an average of 75 minutes lost per service call. The system is set to integrate with IBM Maximo to automate work order generation, further streamlining maintenance operations. By the end of the first quarter of 2026, the technology was deployed across 353 of DEN's 372 conveyances, with plans to upgrade the remaining devices by the end of 2027.
