What's Happening?
Ohio has introduced a new dashboard aimed at tracking chronic absenteeism rates across local school districts. This initiative is designed to help identify the root causes of absenteeism, which is defined as missing 10% of school days or more. The dashboard,
available at Attendance.ohio.gov, allows users to view data by individual school district, building, and grade level. Despite the availability of this tool, participation is optional, and many large districts, including Ohio's three largest public school districts, have not yet uploaded their data. The chronic absenteeism rate in Ohio was 25.1% last school year, a slight decrease from the previous year's 25.6%. This rate has remained high since the pandemic, when public health officials encouraged students to stay home if they felt unwell. Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, noting that students with good attendance are significantly more likely to succeed academically.
