What's Happening?
His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has pledged support for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in combating the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks affecting the province. The King met with MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa
at eMashobeni Royal Palace to discuss strategies for controlling the disease, which has been spreading rapidly, particularly in communal areas near game reserves. The King emphasized the need for increased vaccinations, awareness campaigns, and stricter controls on animal movement from declared Disease Management Areas (DMAs). He also committed to involving traditional leaders and the community in efforts to address food insecurity and illegal animal movements.
Why It's Important?
The support from King Misuzulu kaZwelithini is crucial in mobilizing community efforts to tackle the FMD outbreaks, which pose a significant threat to livestock and agriculture in KwaZulu-Natal. The disease impacts food security and the economic stability of the region, as agriculture is a key sector providing jobs and sustenance. The King's involvement can enhance compliance with movement restrictions and biosecurity measures, essential for containing the disease. The collaboration between traditional leaders and the department may lead to more effective implementation of disease control strategies, benefiting farmers and the broader community.
What's Next?
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development plans to implement resolutions from a recent Consultative Indaba on FMD, including enforcing livestock movement restrictions and increasing vaccination efforts. The department is working with the Agricultural Research Council to share FMD strains with vaccine manufacturers and is seeking authorization for a second diagnostic laboratory. These steps aim to improve disease management and support market access for farmers, particularly those in disadvantaged areas. Continued collaboration with traditional leaders and community engagement will be vital in achieving these goals.
