Professor Kim Jae-kyung, a neuroscientist in the Department of Biological Sciences at KAIST, has been selected as a fellow for the 2026 Asia Young Scientist Fellowship (AYSF). This prestigious award recognizes 12 promising young scientists in Asia who
are at the early stages of independent basic science research and demonstrate potential for pioneering new fields and achieving significant results. As an AYSF fellow, Professor Kim will receive $100,000 (approximately 140 million won) in research funding over two years. His research focuses on understanding how sleep and dreams influence human memory and creativity. Specifically, he investigates how the brain processes waking experiences during sleep to form long-term memories and how brain activity during sleep contributes to learning, memory formation, and functional recovery after brain injury. Recently, Professor Kim has expanded his work to explore the connection between dreams and creativity, hypothesizing that dreams facilitate the combination of past memories and experiences to generate novel ideas, and he aims to uncover the biological principles underlying this process.
