Assistant Professor of Business Analytics and Information Systems, Jasper Jia, at Quinnipiac University, has launched a new study proposing an 'Ethical Roadmap for AI Grief Support in Chronic Illness Care.' The research focuses on the utility of interactive
AI Chatbots in assisting individuals experiencing grief associated with chronic illness. The study aims to provide guidance for developers, healthcare providers, and policymakers as AI integration in patient care continues to grow. Jia was inspired to conduct this research after his grandfather's Alzheimer's diagnosis, recognizing the emotional burden on caregivers and patients during long-term illnesses. He emphasizes that AI Chatbots could offer 24/7 support, a non-judgmental listening ear, and help relieve emotional stress, especially during off-hours when human support might be unavailable. The team analyzed 85 peer-reviewed studies, evaluated existing healthcare and grief-support chatbots, and validated their findings through interviews with geriatric psychiatrists, a dementia care grief counselor, and digital health researchers. The study integrates human values into the technology design process, combining them with the dual process model of grief, which involves oscillating between confronting loss and engaging with daily life.
