What's Happening?
South Korea has awarded L3Harris a contract to supply additional airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft under its E-X Phase 2 program, valued at KRW3.1 trillion ($2.2 billion). L3Harris will provide the 'Phoenix' AEW aircraft, integrating Israel's Elta EL/W-2085 radar with a Bombardier Global 6500 jet. This marks the first export of this type and the first integration of a conformal radar system onto the Global 6500. The Republic of Korea Air Force aims to extend its air defense coverage, particularly against threats from North Korea and neighboring countries.
Why It's Important?
The contract is crucial for South Korea's national security, enhancing its ability to monitor and respond to aerial threats. By expanding its AEW capabilities, South Korea strengthens its defense posture in a region with complex geopolitical dynamics. The deal also signifies a strategic partnership between South Korea and L3Harris, potentially influencing future defense collaborations and technology transfers.
What's Next?
L3Harris plans to integrate the system at Korean Air Aerospace Division facilities, with domestic production of certain radar components. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration will finalize the contract and convene a program kickoff meeting by November, setting the stage for further developments in South Korea's defense capabilities.
