Research from the Ineos Oxford Institute for Antimicrobial Research has identified industrial poultry farming as a key factor in the increased spread of Campylobacter, a bacterium responsible for foodborne illnesses. The study, published in the Proceedings
of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed bacterial genomes from chickens and wild birds in 30 countries, including the U.S., revealing that the global expansion of chicken farming has facilitated the mixing and evolution of Campylobacter strains. The bacterium is the most common cause of diarrhea worldwide, and its resistance to antibiotics is growing, complicating treatment efforts. The study highlights the role of densely populated chicken flocks in acting as 'pathogen sponges,' absorbing and amplifying bacterial strains.
