HEO, an Australian company specializing in non-Earth imaging (NEI) of other spacecraft, has announced a partnership with Planet. This collaboration grants HEO access to Planet's SkySat high-resolution satellites for NEI purposes. The agreement allows
HEO to task SkySat satellites to image other space objects when they are not being used for Earth observation. Initially, this SkySat NEI imagery will be exclusively available to HEO's U.S. government customers due to licensing considerations. Will Crowe, chief executive of HEO, highlighted the importance of having a diverse array of sensors and orbits to increase the likelihood of capturing images of objects of interest at opportune moments. HEO already utilizes over 50 in-orbit sensors, primarily from other Earth observation companies, to monitor space objects. The company also recently acquired its own satellite, Continuum-1, which was repurposed for NEI and is being used to demonstrate rendezvous and proximity operations with a defunct rocket body in low Earth orbit.
