What's Happening?
The Export-Import Bank of China is providing Tk 24.67 billion in preferential buyer’s credit to finance the construction of a China Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Bangladesh. The project, located in Chattogram’s Anwara, is developed on nearly
800 acres and aims to attract export-oriented industries. The zone is expected to become a major manufacturing and logistics hub for Chinese and other foreign investors. The groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction after years of delays due to bureaucratic hurdles and financing issues. The project is anticipated to attract around $1.3 billion in investment and create over 100,000 jobs.
Why It's Important?
The development of the CEIZ is significant for Bangladesh as it aims to strengthen the country's position in regional supply chains and support the government's efforts to transform Chattogram into a leading commercial and industrial hub. The project is expected to increase industrial traffic through the Karnaphuli Tunnel and attract large-scale export-oriented investment, particularly from China. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to drive economic growth, create employment, and potentially lead Bangladesh towards becoming a trillion-dollar economy. The involvement of the Export-Import Bank of China highlights the strategic economic cooperation between Bangladesh and China.
What's Next?
The project is scheduled for implementation from January 2027 to December 2031. The development includes a multipurpose jetty, connecting roads, power substations, and other necessary infrastructure to make the zone investment-ready. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) has approved a Tk 41.89 billion supporting infrastructure project for the zone. As construction progresses, the zone is expected to attract more foreign investment, particularly from Chinese companies, further solidifying economic ties between the two nations.
