What's Happening?
The government of Dominica has engaged the Trinidad-based consulting firm Leve Global Limited to develop a Sustainability Plan and Strategic Framework for the island's agro-processing facility. This initiative aims to enhance the value of locally produced
crops by improving processing, packaging, and marketing systems. The focus is on transforming raw agricultural products into market-ready goods, such as spices, sauces, and specialty foods. The project emphasizes the use of root crops like dasheen and cassava, which have strong local supply and potential for processed products. Leve Global will design a business model to ensure the facility operates efficiently and benefits local farmers and businesses.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant for Dominica's economy, where agriculture accounts for about 15% of GDP. By improving agro-processing capabilities, the initiative seeks to increase the income of local farmers and create jobs. It addresses the challenge of value capture, ensuring that more of the economic benefits from agriculture remain within the local community. The project also aims to enhance Dominica's competitiveness in regional and export markets, contributing to economic resilience amid global supply chain uncertainties and rising food costs.
What's Next?
The next steps involve implementing the strategic framework and business model developed by Leve Global. This will likely include further stakeholder consultations and the establishment of partnerships to support the facility's operations. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other Caribbean nations looking to strengthen their agro-processing sectors. Additionally, the project may explore opportunities for intra-regional trade and export expansion, further integrating Dominica into the global agricultural market.
