What's Happening?
The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) and Ricochet have partnered for the Ricochet PPE Award Program, which aims to provide essential wildland gear to fire departments in need. The September application period for this program is open from September 1
through noon ET on September 30. Eligible fire departments can apply to receive Ricochet Wildland Gear, consisting of a jacket and pant, designed to improve responder safety and operational effectiveness. Five departments will be selected to receive five sets of gear each. To qualify, departments must annually respond to wildfires (including grassfires/brushfires), have at least one active NVFC member, be over 50% volunteer, serve a population of 25,000 or less, be located in the U.S. and legally organized under state law, and demonstrate a clear need for the gear. The Ricochet Wildland Gear is UL Certified to NFPA 1950 (NFPA 1977) – 2025 Edition, designed to be lightweight, breathable, and reduce heat stress.

This award program is crucial for enhancing the safety and operational capabilities of volunteer fire departments across the U.S., particularly those in areas prone to wildfires. Volunteer departments often operate with limited budgets, making it challenging to acquire specialized and certified personal protective equipment (PPE). The provision of UL Certified Ricochet Wildland Gear ensures that firefighters are equipped with high-quality, modern equipment designed to reduce heat stress and improve mobility, directly addressing the physical demands and risks associated with wildland firefighting. This initiative not only protects the lives of volunteer firefighters but also strengthens the overall emergency response infrastructure in smaller communities, which are frequently on the front lines of wildland urban interface fires. What's Next?
The application period for the Ricochet Wildland Gear will close on September 30. Following this, the NVFC and Ricochet will review applications and select five eligible fire departments to receive the gear. This is the second of three application periods, with an October period planned for Ricochet Wildland + Technical Rescue Dual-Cert Gear. Departments that apply for or receive one type of gear remain eligible to apply for others. Volunteer fire departments meeting the criteria are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline. The continued success of this program will likely lead to further collaborations aimed at equipping volunteer firefighters with the necessary tools to perform their duties safely and effectively.
