What's Happening?
Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan, in collaboration with the MassHire Bristol Workforce Board, has initiated the Youth Employment Gateway Cities Learning Community Pilot. This program is designed to enhance youth employment opportunities across the greater
Fall River, Taunton, and Attleboro areas. The initiative aims to connect young adults with summer employment, providing them with job readiness and occupational skills. The program also seeks to address the challenge local businesses face in filling seasonal and long-term positions by offering a ready pool of young talent. During the summer of 2025, nearly 300 youths were placed in jobs or received job training through the Youthworks program, which included a variety of industries and provided participants with soft skills and job readiness training.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the dual challenge of youth unemployment and the difficulty businesses face in finding seasonal workers. By providing young adults with employment opportunities, the program helps them gain valuable skills and experience, which can be crucial for their future career paths. For local businesses, the initiative offers a solution to staffing challenges by providing access to a pool of ready-to-work young adults. This not only helps businesses fill positions but also contributes to the development of a new talent pipeline, which is essential for the long-term economic health of the region. The program's focus on career readiness and employer partnerships is crucial in fostering a skilled workforce that can meet the demands of the local economy.
What's Next?
The program is actively seeking businesses willing to participate by offering seasonal positions to young adults. Interested parties can contact the MassHire Youth Connection office or the MassHire Bristol Workforce Board for more information. As the initiative progresses, it is expected to expand its reach and impact, potentially serving as a model for similar programs in other regions. The success of this pilot could lead to increased funding and support for youth employment programs, further enhancing job opportunities for young people and addressing workforce needs in the community.
