What's Happening?
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has confirmed new detections of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in farmed white-tailed deer across three counties: Calhoun, Kent, and Mackinac. An infected 2½-year-old deer was found in Calhoun County,
a 4-year-old deer in Kent County, and a 3-year-old deer in Mackinac County. The first two cases were identified through Michigan's CWD surveillance program for farmed deer, while the Mackinac County detection emerged during trace investigations linked to the Calhoun County herd. CWD is a progressive, fatal neurological disease affecting cervid species, including white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, and moose. It can be transmitted directly between animals or indirectly through environmental contamination. Infected animals may appear healthy for months or years before showing symptoms such as abnormal behavior, progressive weight loss, and physical debilitation. CWD has been previously detected in Michigan-farmed deer facilities in several other counties, including Lake, Mecosta, Montcalm, Newaygo, and Osceola.
