What's Happening?
The Fund for Shared Insight, a collaborative initiative aimed at transforming philanthropic practices, is set to conclude its operations on June 30 after a 12-year run. Launched in 2014, the initiative sought to improve philanthropy by encouraging funders
and nonprofits to listen to and empower the communities they serve. The project was spearheaded by major philanthropic organizations, including the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Ford Foundation, and involved over 100 funders and numerous grantee organizations. The initiative's key projects, Listen4Good and Listen to Community, will continue its mission. Listen4Good, which became a standalone nonprofit in 2023, focuses on helping nonprofits gather and act on community feedback. Meanwhile, Listen to Community, launched in 2025, aims to encourage funders to listen and shift power to communities.
Why It's Important?
The conclusion of the Fund for Shared Insight marks a significant moment in the philanthropic sector, highlighting the growing emphasis on community-centric approaches. By promoting feedback and power-shifting practices, the initiative has influenced how funders and nonprofits engage with communities. This shift is crucial as it addresses power imbalances and enhances the effectiveness of philanthropic efforts. The initiative's legacy is evident in the adoption of participatory grantmaking and trust-based philanthropy, which prioritize the voices of those most affected by funding decisions. As these practices gain traction, they promise to reshape the philanthropic landscape, making it more responsive and equitable.
What's Next?
As the Fund for Shared Insight sunsets, its projects, Listen4Good and Listen to Community, will carry forward its mission. Listen4Good will continue to support nonprofits in implementing feedback systems, while Listen to Community will focus on encouraging funders to adopt community-centric practices. These efforts are expected to further embed the principles of listening and power-shifting in the philanthropic sector. The ongoing work of these projects will likely influence more funders to adopt these practices, potentially leading to broader systemic changes in how philanthropy operates.
Beyond the Headlines
The Fund for Shared Insight's emphasis on racial equity and community empowerment reflects broader societal shifts towards inclusivity and justice. The initiative's work has been particularly relevant in the context of recent social movements and political challenges to equity work. By integrating racial equity into its mission, the initiative has set a precedent for other philanthropic entities to follow. This focus on equity not only addresses historical injustices but also enhances the legitimacy and impact of philanthropic efforts.
