What's Happening?
NASA has selected a satellite mission led by the University of California San Diego for its Earth System Explorers program. The Earth Dynamics Geodetic Explorer (EDGE) mission, led by glaciologist Helen Amanda Fricker, aims to enhance understanding of Earth's
dynamic systems and improve disaster mitigation capabilities. The mission will use advanced laser altimetry technology to make high-resolution, three-dimensional observations of Earth's surface, including land, vegetation, ice, and coastal regions. The mission is expected to launch no earlier than 2030.
Why It's Important?
The EDGE mission represents a significant advancement in Earth observation technology, providing critical data to improve our understanding of environmental changes and natural disasters. By enhancing our ability to monitor Earth's dynamic systems, the mission will support efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and other environmental challenges. The selection of a UC San Diego-led team for this mission highlights the university's leadership in scientific research and innovation. The mission's success could have far-reaching implications for environmental policy and disaster preparedness.
