What's Happening?
The SoLa Foundation, the nonprofit arm of SoLa Impact, is making significant strides in Los Angeles by focusing on cultural and educational initiatives. Founded by Martin Muoto, SoLa Impact is a social impact real estate fund that aims to provide affordable
housing in low-income communities. The foundation, launched in 2018, has awarded over $2.2 million in scholarships and trained thousands of young people in college and career-ready skills. It has also established the SoLa Tech & Entrepreneurship Center in partnership with Riot Games and Live Nation. The foundation's board includes notable figures from Hollywood, music, and tech, such as Grammy-winning songwriter James Fauntleroy. The foundation's efforts are supported by a commitment from SoLa Impact to allocate 13% of its profits to the foundation, a decision influenced by the Black Lives Matter movement.
Why It's Important?
The SoLa Foundation's initiatives are crucial in addressing educational and economic disparities in underresourced communities in Los Angeles. By providing scholarships and training programs, the foundation is equipping young people with the skills needed to succeed in today's job market. The involvement of major entertainment and tech companies like Riot Games and Live Nation highlights the potential for cross-industry collaboration to drive social change. The foundation's focus on culture as a tool for change underscores the importance of addressing not just economic needs but also the cultural and social dimensions of community development. This approach could serve as a model for other organizations looking to make a meaningful impact in similar communities.
What's Next?
The SoLa Foundation plans to continue expanding its programs and partnerships. With the recent opening of a new AI and Entertainment Center on Crenshaw Boulevard, funded by Live Nation, the foundation is poised to further its impact in the community. The center will host the Live Nation Next Gen Program, an 18-week paid apprenticeship for youth, which aims to prepare them for careers in the music industry. As the foundation grows, it will likely seek to deepen its partnerships and explore new opportunities to integrate technology and culture into its initiatives. The foundation's ongoing efforts to address community needs and its strategic partnerships position it to play a significant role in shaping the future of South Los Angeles.
