What's Happening?
For the first time, New York's WIC program will cover Cholov Yisroel infant formula, following a decision by Governor Kathy Hochul and State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. This change, resulting from a three-year campaign led by Met Council,
will benefit tens of thousands of frum families across New York. The inclusion of Cholov Yisroel formula addresses a significant gap in the WIC program, ensuring that families can access nutritional support that aligns with their religious dietary requirements.
Why It's Important?
The inclusion of Cholov Yisroel formula in the WIC program represents a significant step towards inclusivity and support for diverse communities. By addressing the specific needs of frum families, the program ensures equitable access to nutritional benefits, promoting health and well-being. This change reflects a broader commitment to accommodating cultural and religious diversity in public programs, setting a precedent for other states to follow. It also highlights the importance of advocacy and collaboration in effecting meaningful policy changes.
