A new review published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation suggests that common medications used during pregnancy may disrupt fetal brain development. Researchers from the University of Nebraska Medical Center examined evidence linking medications such
as antipsychotics, antidepressants, beta blockers, and cholesterol-lowering drugs to disruptions in cholesterol production in the developing brain. Cholesterol is crucial for fetal brain development, supporting processes like nerve growth and synapse formation. The review highlights concerns about sterol biosynthesis-inhibiting medications, which can interfere with cholesterol production, potentially leading to neurodevelopmental issues. However, experts caution that the evidence is not yet strong enough to conclude that these medications cause developmental problems in children.
