A team of astronomers at the European Space Agency has developed an AI tool named AnomalyMatch to search for rare astronomical objects in the Hubble Legacy Archive. This tool was able to sift through nearly
100 million image cutouts in just two and a half days, uncovering approximately 1,400 anomalous objects, with over 800 being previously undocumented. The anomalies include galaxies in the process of merging, gravitational lenses, and other rare objects like jellyfish galaxies and planet-forming disks. The AI tool significantly enhances the ability to process large datasets, which are too vast for manual inspection by human experts.
