What's Happening?
After a 25-year wait, American Legion Post 390 in Gresham, Wisconsin, has received a Vietnam-era AH-1 Cobra helicopter. This helicopter is slated to be a central feature of a larger veterans memorial park project in the village. Post Commander Raymond
Rigsby stated that the Legion initially requested military equipment through the Army’s donation program over two decades ago. Earlier this year, the post was informed that a helicopter was available at Fort Hood, Texas. Rigsby, along with Marshal Giese, a Vietnam veteran who submitted the original request, began the process of transporting the AH-1 Cobra to Gresham. Local businesses, including KAM Specialty Transport out of Bonduel, assisted with the transportation from Texas to Wisconsin. Rigsby and his son traveled to Texas to help prepare the helicopter for shipment, including removing its rotor blades. The helicopter arrived in Gresham last week.
Why It's Important?
The arrival of the Vietnam-era AH-1 Cobra helicopter is a significant milestone for American Legion Post 390 and the community of Gresham, Wisconsin. This project serves as a tangible tribute to veterans, particularly those who served in the Vietnam War, providing a focal point for remembrance and honor. The long wait for the helicopter underscores the dedication and perseverance of the Legion and its members in bringing this memorial to fruition. The involvement of local businesses in the transportation effort highlights community solidarity and support for veterans' initiatives. The planned veterans memorial park, with the helicopter as its centerpiece, will offer a dedicated space for reflection, education, and honoring the sacrifices of service members, fostering a deeper connection between the community and its military history.
What's Next?
The AH-1 Cobra helicopter is now expected to be a centerpiece of the planned veterans memorial park in Gresham. The proposed memorial will also include additional flagpoles representing the United States, Wisconsin, POW/MIA, and various branches of the military. Post Commander Raymond Rigsby also plans to move their unknown soldier tomb to the new site and create a memorial wall where families can purchase bricks to honor veterans. The project is being developed with support from the Village of Gresham. The post is currently awaiting final plans for the grounds and hopes to hold a groundbreaking ceremony before winter. The group aims to hold a formal dedication of the memorial, possibly around Veterans Day next year. Fundraising efforts are also underway, with donation boxes placed at local businesses and a letter-writing campaign planned.
