What's Happening?
Several organizations in Augusta, including the United Way of the CSRA, The Hub for Community Innovations, RISE Augusta, and the Dr. Paulette P. Harris Literacy Center, are collecting book donations for the Book Bash 2026. This initiative aims to provide
local students with access to high-quality reading materials during the summer. The goal is to distribute 1,500 book bags, each containing five to six books, to children ranging from infants to high school seniors. Donations of new and lightly used books are being accepted until May 22 at the United Way office in Augusta.
Why It's Important?
Access to books is essential for promoting literacy and educational development among students. The Book Bash 2026 initiative addresses the gap in access to reading materials, particularly for students who may not have books at home. By providing these resources, the program supports continuous learning and helps prevent the 'summer slide,' where students lose some of the academic gains made during the school year. This effort highlights the importance of community involvement in education and the role of literacy in shaping future opportunities for young people.
