What's Happening?
An international team of researchers, led by the University of Oxford, has discovered two exceptionally low-density giant planets, TOI-791 b and TOI-791 c, which are described as 'super-puff' planets due to their density being lower than that of cotton
candy. These planets orbit an F7-type dwarf star located approximately 1,110 light years away in the constellation of Volans. The discovery was made through the Planet Hunters TESS citizen-science project, and the planets' densities were measured by observing their gravitational interactions. The planets are locked in a 5:3 mean-motion resonance, causing them to exert gravitational forces on each other, which affects their orbital timings.

The discovery of these super-puff planets provides a unique opportunity to study the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Their extremely low densities challenge existing models of planet formation, suggesting that these planets may have formed in cold regions of their protoplanetary disc, allowing them to accumulate large gaseous envelopes.
