What's Happening?
The Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) has announced the launch of the Circular Fashion Partnership: Türkiye, a new initiative aimed at developing a circular textile system in Türkiye by capturing and recycling post-industrial textile waste. This initiative,
announced during Sustainability Talks Istanbul, is led by GFA in collaboration with Rematters and supported by partners such as Reverse Resources and Closed Loop Fashion. The program, set to begin in early 2026, will focus on establishing textile waste management systems, enhancing traceability through digital tools, and connecting manufacturers with recyclers. The initiative aims to support compliance with evolving policy frameworks and foster national collaboration to drive systemic change. Türkiye, as a leading apparel manufacturing hub, is well-positioned to scale textile-to-textile recycling due to its integrated industry and proximity to the EU.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the growing issue of textile waste, which is a major environmental concern. By developing scalable models for waste segregation and recycling, the program aims to reduce dependency on virgin materials and landfills. The initiative also aligns with global efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainability in the fashion industry. For Türkiye, this represents an opportunity to future-proof its textile ecosystem, unlock economic value from waste, and contribute to a just, circular transition. The program's success could serve as a model for other countries, demonstrating the potential for local collaboration and innovation in achieving circularity in the textile industry.
What's Next?
Throughout 2026, the Circular Fashion Partnership: Türkiye will engage stakeholders across the value chain through activities such as on-site waste management assessments, training, and capacity building. The program will also include recycling pitch sessions, matchmaking events, and policy dialogues with key national actors. These efforts aim to support Türkiye in transitioning to a circular textile system and achieving long-term competitiveness in the global market. The initiative calls on brands producing in Türkiye to participate, which could lead to increased collaboration and innovation in the industry.
