What's Happening?
In response to recent cyberattacks on U.S. water systems, including two utilities in New Jersey, Congressman Josh Gottheimer has introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at enhancing cybersecurity for water utilities. The proposed measures include providing
AI security tools to water utility power stations and establishing a rapid response notification service for small and midsize towns. These initiatives are designed to protect critical infrastructure from cyber threats posed by adversaries such as China, Russia, and Iran. The cyberattacks, which affected water systems across 12 states, highlight the vulnerabilities in the nation's water infrastructure. While major utilities like American Water and Veolia were not impacted, the attacks underscore the need for improved cybersecurity measures.
