What's Happening?
The Dayton Police Department, in collaboration with city leaders, has inaugurated a new police substation at 30 South Main Street, strategically located next to the Dayton RTA Hub. This development marks the first downtown police presence since 2012,
addressing the need for enhanced security in the area. City Manager Shelley Dickstein emphasized the importance of this initiative, citing the significant increase in downtown residents and investments since 2014. The substation will house over 30 police officers, including a dedicated officer for mental health and homelessness outreach. The temporary facility is a precursor to a permanent station planned for Fourth and St. Clair streets, expected to be completed by 2028 or 2029.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the new substation is a critical step in bolstering public safety in downtown Dayton, an area that has seen substantial growth and investment in recent years. The presence of a dedicated police force is expected to deter crime, enhance community safety, and provide immediate response capabilities. This initiative also reflects a broader commitment to addressing social issues, as evidenced by the inclusion of officers focused on mental health and homelessness. The strategic location of the substation near key downtown landmarks underscores its role in maintaining a secure environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.
What's Next?
As the temporary substation begins operations, the focus will shift to the construction of a permanent facility at Fourth and St. Clair streets. This long-term project, slated for completion by 2028 or 2029, will further solidify the police presence in downtown Dayton. In the interim, the city will monitor the impact of the substation on local crime rates and community safety, potentially adjusting resources and strategies as needed. The collaboration between the Dayton Police Department, RTA, and city officials will continue to be crucial in ensuring the success of this initiative.
