What's Happening?
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has announced the 2026 Choose Iowa Calendar Contest, inviting school-aged students to submit artwork that combines Iowa agriculture with a patriotic theme. This initiative is part of Iowa's celebration of the 250th
anniversary of the United States. The contest encourages students to highlight aspects of Iowa agriculture, such as food, beverages, livestock, crop production, or horticulture, while incorporating elements of patriotism and American pride. Winning submissions will be featured in the 2026/2027 Choose Iowa calendar, distributed during the Iowa State Fair and online. Secretary Naig will recognize the winning artists at a special awards ceremony on August 18, 2026, during the Iowa State Fair.
Why It's Important?
The Choose Iowa Calendar Contest serves as an educational opportunity for students to engage with and appreciate the significance of agriculture in Iowa and the broader United States. By combining agricultural themes with patriotic elements, the contest fosters a sense of pride and awareness among young participants about the role of agriculture in sustaining communities and the nation. This initiative not only promotes creativity and artistic expression but also underscores the importance of agriculture in the state's economy and cultural heritage. It encourages students to explore and understand the agricultural sector's contributions to society, potentially inspiring future careers in agriculture.
What's Next?
Students interested in participating must submit their artwork by June 1, 2026. The submissions will be judged based on creativity and the integration of agricultural and patriotic themes. The contest provides an opportunity for students to gain recognition for their artistic talents and understanding of agriculture. As the contest progresses, educators and parents are encouraged to support students in their creative endeavors. The awards ceremony at the Iowa State Fair will celebrate the selected young artists, providing them with a platform to showcase their work and receive acknowledgment from the community.
