What's Happening?
The Phu Quoc light rail transit (LRT) project is progressing rapidly, with trial operations expected to begin in June 2027. The 17.5km LRT line will connect Phu Quoc International Airport with the APEC International Conference and Exhibition Centre. The project,
developed under a build-operate-transfer model, has faced challenges due to the island's geology and weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, significant progress has been made, with construction teams working around the clock to meet the schedule.
Why It's Important?
The LRT project is a key infrastructure development for Phu Quoc, aimed at improving transportation on the island and supporting the APEC Economic Leaders' Week in 2027. Once operational, the LRT will reduce travel time between the airport and the southern part of the island, enhancing the island's appeal as a tourist destination and facilitating international events.
