A recent study conducted by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) in collaboration with the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute has found that night shift workers with chronic insomnia are at a significantly higher risk of developing
long COVID. The study, which followed 2,941 adults in Catalonia, revealed that night shift workers had an 88% higher risk of developing long COVID compared to day workers. This risk was even more pronounced in night workers with obesity. The research highlights the role of circadian rhythm disruption in the transition from acute COVID-19 infection to persistent symptoms. Chronic insomnia independently increased the risk of long COVID by 42%, and when combined with night shift work, the risk was 2.7 times higher than for day workers without insomnia.
