A new report by TNTP (formerly The New Teacher Project) indicates that the Providence Public School District (PPSD) has established a stronger and more coherent foundation for math instruction. The report highlights that students are increasingly experiencing
a common curriculum, consistent grade-level expectations, and uniform instructional practices across the district. This marks a significant improvement from a 2019 Johns Hopkins report, which identified low levels of academic instruction and a lack of quality curriculum and coherence within PPSD. The current findings show meaningful progress in instructional conditions and their positive impact on student achievement. Specifically, TNTP analyzed i-Ready data for students in grades 3-8 from SY 2022-23 through SY 2025-26, revealing that a large majority of students (87% in grades 3-5 and 82% in grades 6-8) who started the year on track remained on track. Furthermore, among students needing the most support, 30% of elementary and 21% of middle school students made progress towards grade-level learning. Classroom observations also showed strong instruction in 81% of math lessons, with 100% focusing on grade-level content.
