What's Happening?
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is focusing on responsible mining as a key driver for industrialisation and economic diversification in the region. During the 9th SADC Industrialisation Week in Durban, South Africa, the importance of
responsible mineral extraction was highlighted. The event, supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), is part of a five-year project led by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) to promote sustainable mining practices across six SADC countries. The project aims to develop ESG-compliant mining policies and improve environmental and climate monitoring practices. It also seeks to ensure participation and benefit-sharing for local mining communities.
Why It's Important?
The initiative is significant as it addresses the growing global demand for critical energy transition minerals (CETMs), which are essential for a clean energy future. By promoting responsible mining, SADC aims to enhance industrial competitiveness and economic diversification. The project also emphasizes the importance of environmental governance in shaping industrial policy, which is crucial for sustainable development. Additionally, the empowerment of artisanal and small-scale miners is a key focus, ensuring that benefits from mining activities are distributed across the entire value chain.
What's Next?
The project will continue to develop ESG-compliant mining policies and improve environmental practices. It will also focus on enhancing the capacity of local communities in mining areas. The initiative aims to align regional policies with the needs of enterprises, traders, and mining communities, ensuring that artisanal and small-scale miners are included in the benefits of the mining value chain. The project is expected to contribute to the development of competitive and resilient industrialisation in the SADC region.
