What's Happening?
Telecom Namibia has signed agreements with Angola's Gabinete de Gestão do Programa Espacial Nacional (GGPEN), Angola Telecom, and SATCAB to enhance its regional satellite and subsea cable connectivity. A pilot commercial agreement with GGPEN will utilize
the Angosat-2 satellite platform to expand digital services across Namibia and Southern Africa. This agreement transitions from a successful Proof of Concept to a real-network trial, aiming to evaluate the platform's technical and commercial viability. Additionally, Telecom Namibia has signed a master service agreement with Angola Telecom and SATCAB to integrate the Southern African Regional Submarine System (SARSSy) with the Equiano Cable System. This integration will provide additional international capacity to Namibia, Angola, and other countries along the west coast of Southern Africa.
Why It's Important?
These agreements are significant as they aim to enhance digital connectivity in Southern Africa, potentially benefiting various sectors such as tourism, mining, education, and agriculture. By expanding its infrastructure, Telecom Namibia is positioning itself as a key player in regional connectivity, which could lead to increased economic activity and development in the region. The integration with the Equiano Cable System, in particular, promises to boost international capacity, which is crucial for supporting growing data demands and fostering economic growth.
What's Next?
Telecom Namibia and its partners will proceed with the pilot phase of the Angosat-2 satellite services, with plans to commercially launch the services upon successful evaluation. The integration of SARSSy with the Equiano Cable System will continue, with Telecom Namibia serving as the landing party and providing initial transmission capacity. These developments are expected to enhance connectivity and service delivery in the region, potentially attracting more businesses and investments.
