What's Happening?
Rheinmetall has delivered its first Skynex cannon-based short-range air defense (SHORAD) system to the Italian Army. The delivery, announced in December 2025, includes a comprehensive system featuring
a Rheinmetall Italia X-band Tactical Acquisition Radar 3D (X-TAR3D), an Oerlikon Skymaster TLCN fire-control system, and four 35 mm guns. This system was handed over at the Air Defence Artillery Command in Sabaudia. Italy had ordered the Skynex system in January 2025 for EUR73 million, with an option for three additional systems. The X-TAR3D radar has a range of up to 50 km, and the system is designed for counter-unmanned aerial vehicle operations, capable of firing 1,000 rounds per minute at a range of up to 4 km.
Why It's Important?
The delivery of the Skynex system marks a significant enhancement in Italy's air defense capabilities, particularly in countering unmanned aerial threats. This development is crucial for Italy's national security, providing a modernized defense system that can effectively manage and neutralize aerial threats. The investment in such advanced technology reflects Italy's commitment to strengthening its military infrastructure and readiness. Additionally, this move could influence other European NATO members to consider similar upgrades, potentially leading to a broader modernization of air defense systems across the region.
What's Next?
With the successful delivery of the first Skynex system, Italy may proceed with the option to acquire additional systems, further bolstering its air defense capabilities. This could also lead to increased collaboration with Rheinmetall for future defense projects. Other NATO countries might observe Italy's advancements and consider similar upgrades to their defense systems, potentially leading to a wave of modernization across Europe.
