The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in China has reported significant ecological improvements following the implementation of a 10-year fishing ban on the Yangtze River, which began in 2021. The ban has led to the monitoring of 351 indigenous
fish species, an increase of 43 species compared to the period before the ban. Additionally, the volume of resources in the main stream of the Yangtze River has doubled compared to pre-ban levels. The index of biological integrity in key waters has improved, reversing the decline in aquatic biological resources. The ministry has also noted a nearly 40% reduction in fishery-related criminal cases in 2025. Efforts are ongoing to enhance the protection of aquatic life, restore important habitats, and improve the livelihoods of former fishers.
