What's Happening?
The city of Aurora has announced that the new baby elk at Phillips Park Zoo will be named Benji. This decision came after more than 800 votes were cast by the public. The baby elk was born on June 6 to its mother, Aashi, who is approximately 10 years
old and joined the zoo's elk herd in April. The public was invited to choose from five names proposed by the zoo staff: Chet, Barry, Benji, Kiran, and Asher. The voting concluded with Benji being the preferred choice. Visitors can see Benji at Phillips Park Zoo, which is open from Thursdays through Tuesdays.
Why It's Important?
The naming of the baby elk at Phillips Park Zoo highlights community engagement and public interest in local wildlife conservation efforts. By involving the public in the naming process, the zoo fosters a sense of community ownership and connection to the animals. This event also serves to increase awareness and visitation to the zoo, potentially boosting local tourism and educational opportunities. Engaging the community in such activities can enhance public support for conservation initiatives and the zoo's role in wildlife education.
What's Next?
With the naming process complete, the focus will likely shift to the continued care and development of Benji within the zoo's elk herd. The zoo may organize additional events or educational programs to further engage the community and promote awareness about elk and other wildlife. The increased interest generated by the naming event could lead to more visitors, providing the zoo with opportunities to expand its educational outreach and conservation efforts.
